BBC micro:bit x iOi

In today’s digital society data is everywhere, so understanding its potential to help us learn more about the world around us has never been more important. The new BBC micro:bit playground survey is an exciting way for children to learn these skills at an early age, getting to grips with data collection in a way that is relevant to their everyday lives, in a familiar and fun setting.

If children become data-literate now, they will be well prepared to navigate and take advantage of the huge amounts of data that will no doubt play an important role in their adult lives.

We teamed up with the BBC to help them reach teachers to train them in using the micro:bit - pocket-sized, multi-use computers that were offered to primary schools across the UK as part of the wider BBC micro:bit – the next gen campaign. As part of this special Institute of Imagination x BBC micro:bit webinar,  we designed and shared with teachers how classes can use micro:bits to collect data and find out how much they get moving during break time! Children worked together to explore how to code the micro:bit to become a physical tracking machine and then collect, explore and investigate the data as part of the BBC Playground Survey.
